50's Style Long

The wedding ceremony that used to take place earlier was a lot more traditional than what it is today. Unlike the wedding ceremony held today, the 50’s was not about showing and flaunting a lot of skin.

If you compare the wedding dresses that are made today, The 50’s style long wedding dress was very modest. The 50’s style long dresses had sleeves and were of traditional length. The necklines of those dresses were not too low either and there were very few embellishments.

The 50 style long dress was of ultra feminine style and was the in thing then. With the introduction of Dior in the fashion industry, people became a little more liberal. Hence, after the World War II, there was a change in fabric being used. The wedding dresses were now being worn with tall and thin heels. It had a bodice that came with a pointed bosom, a well emphasized waist, and rounded shoulders. The 50’s style long dress thus took on the full skirts in those times.
The 50’s style long dress had another unique characteristic. It had lace which symbolized freedom from war. The lace that was a rage in those times was the French lace. The brides in those times thus celebrated the manufacturing of lace again. Hence, you could find tiers of Chantilly lace one upon another.

During the 1950’s, the hourglass figure was a big rage. It would be flaunted with the use of crinolines, hoop skirts and many other techniques. Another very unique feature of the 50’s style long dress was the use of metal zipper at the back of the dress.

The 50’s style long dress also experienced the introduction of many other changes like:

  • Gothic style upstanding collars
  • Strapless dress with lace boleros
  • Instead of floor length long dresses, ankle length dress came into fashion
  • Flutter hems
  • Long sleeves or three quarters that had a wedding point
  • Layered materials
  • Scooped neckline
  • Instead of Chantilly lace being used, more stiffer fabric were used which was also more opaque
  • Dropped hemline

The 50’s style long wedding dresses, though not a rage today, is still favored by the more traditionalistic group.
