By the Victorian era, camisoles were being worn over the corset. This would hide the corset, thus adding to the whole personality the illusion of weight. The camisoles over the years became much lighter as well as shorter in length. Thus it gradually went on to become a must have item in the fashion world.

Very soon corsets went out of fashion due to concerns of possible health risk. This is when the teddies were introduced to world of fashionable undergarments. In fact, teddies were considered to be the earliest example of the camisole. Soon the teddies became shorter, tighter and smarter. The designers began experimenting with the popular undergarment and introduced a new style of camisole which was separated into two pieces.

This led to the introduction of the new set of camisoles. During the 1980's, it was stars like Madonna, who introduced the style of wearing undergarments as outer wear. This was the first time that the lingerie was bought out of the bedroom to the world stage.

Today camisoles are a must have for every wardrobe, no matter if it is a teen or an adult. There are camisole sets available today with matching tops and panties. It is also worn with skirts and jeans.
