Underbust Corsets
The underbust corsets is also known as the waist cincher and the ribbon corset. It covers the torso of the body and extends from just below the boobs to the tummy. Though it is less restrictive than the overbust corset, yet if you talk of elegance, than it is as much elegant as any other corset types.
The underbust corset was first used during the 1860's and was popular until the early part of 1900's. Comparatively, when we talk of length, it is shorter as it goes around the waist only. But it like any other corset it is strapped behind at the back. Thus it appears as being a wide belt which is used to clinch the waist and give the body a hourglass shape.
Many women used to wear it to bed while others used it to wear under their dresses. It mostly served the purpose of an undergarment for many women. After reaching the height of popularity in the early 1900's, the corsets vanished from the fashion scene.
It was in 1947, that Dior who went onto become a popular fashion designer, introduced it back in the fashion scene. It became very popular mainly because at that time the nipped in waist was in fashion. Thus underbust corsets served the purpose and was an instant hit with the fashion conscious group. But once again the popularity of it faded and the underbust corset went off the fashion scene. It was again reintroduced to the fashion scene by 1985. Ever since , it has remained in fashion and has also gained in popularity.
The corset was used by many for aesthetic reasons. It was used for applying force on the waist which would than result a hourglass figure. It had its own such benefits but very soon it went out of fashion. It was believed that it also benefited in terms of health, especially when it would force postural support by applying pressure to the sacroiliac joints and the hips. It was also believed that underbust corsets helped in strengthening the pelvic area which would become weak after child birth.
Even men are known to use corsets. They would wear it especially under the clothes to support their mid section. It was earlier considered a taboo for men wearing a corset. But when it became public that Prince Albert used to wear one on a regular basis, corsets became widely popular and acceptable among men.
Even today underbust corset is widely popular among men. They wear it in many ways and for different reasons and purposes. They are usually worn for posture but at the same time it is also used as a cummerbund and worn outside a tuxedo.
The underbust corsets are hugely popular today both among men and women. Especially women, they do not use it any longer as just an undergarment. Rather they flaunt it outside, very often combining it with their office wear and thus adding some spice to the formal and boring outfit.
The underbust corsets, after being in and out of fashion, is finally here to stay!
