Corsets were stopped being used around about World War II. Since then it went into an oblivion and disappeared from the fashion scene. It was not until few years back that it came back into the fashion scene thanks to the celebrities like Madonna and designers like Jean Paul Gautier.

It was made popular further by the use of it in the popular Hollywood movie called Moulin Rouge. The use of corsets are not just limited to the designers and celebrities. It is today available in a chain of clothing stores. These stores today sell corset tops which are made of softer material and look like the corsets.

The corset thus is no longer a classic undergarment form. It is back in vogue as the women today are getting back to achieving that hourglass figure, which fascinates the opposite sex.

If we take a look back into history then corsets have been in use since the ancient times. It was in use in the 16th century and was then known as stays. The early version of it was a simple and plain bodice that had tabs by the  waist which was further stiffened by whalebone, buckram and horn.

This was one of the classic corset designs. In the front the corset also had a busk added to it, which was made of either metal, wood or ivory. In the 18th century, however, the corset underwent some more changes. During this time there was more use of whalebones and also the garments had extra boning in them.

The classic design corsets extended up to the neck in length. It used to be wide and low in the front, while at the back it extended up to the neck. The idea behind this corset style was to draw back the shoulders and highlight the bust. The corset was used in another form. The French women used corsets in the form of quilted waistcoats.

During the 1840's, however, even men started wearing corsets. They would claim that they needed corsets to control their back pain. In the 19th century, the trend changed again. This time the corsets which were longer in length were in vogue. It underwent further changes with the shoulder straps being removed. Later, corsets became more common and began to be used by women from different classes of the society.

The classical form of corsets would use metal bones to provide it rigidity. This would further be fastened which would then help in getting a hour glass figure and also maintain and straight and dignified posture.

Though over the years the classical design corsets have undergone various changes, the concept remains the same.
